It’s definitely worth it. Not only because what you see and learn is unique, but you also get the chance to be in another country and learn their traditions, cuisine, background and language.

At her summer internship, senior Renata Valencia (‘18) gained professional and personal experience while working at the non-profit organization Psique Psychological Center in Quito, Ecuador. Although her degree is in business, working in the psychology field gave her a different perspective.

“Everything I learned was useful,” Renata says. “But what I took the most out of being there was being aware of mental health and being able to understand it more.”

Originally from Ecuador, Renata says it was the perfect opportunity for her to be home with family and get internship hours for college credit. With the help of assistant professor of Spanish Willie Suarez, Renata applied and was accepted.

“A normal day was being with patients, helping them with whatever they needed; drawing, walking with them, talking to doctors and being present in the appointments with psychologists,” says Renata.

Not only did she build relationships with patients and the main psychologist, Renata also had a once in a lifetime experience. Now, she's encouraging others to intern abroad if given the opportunity.

“It’s definitely worth it. Not only because what you see and learn is unique, but you also get the chance to be in another country and learn their traditions, cuisine, background and language. Being abroad will give you more experience than the actual job.”

In addition to Ecuador, global internships at for-profit and non-profit organizations are offered in Chile (through la Universidad de los Andes) and Spain (through Universidad de Cádiz). Contact Dr. Suarez for more information.
