Meet Nicole Raner

Webb, Iowa
Elementary Education

The Briar Cliff education program is very unique. Some of my first classes were in different education classrooms watching and observing. This allowed me to see and understand what teaching different age levels was like. Each year after that, I was introduced to more and more opportunities for hands-on experience. By the time I graduate, I will know exactly what to expect and how to be a successful educator.

As an elementary education major with an emphasis in science and social studies, Nicole Raner (’21) hopes to have her own classroom and inspire students for years to come.

The Webb, Iowa native started her freshman year with the intention of pursuing a biology degree. After taking a couple education classes, Nicole found her passion and officially changed majors as she felt a call towards education. Collaborating with the science department, Nicole was able to turn those “extra” classes into a science and social studies endorsement.

As a junior, Nicole continues to work towards her goal by participating in the Professional Development School (PDS) where Briar Cliff partners with Leeds Elementary to provide over 120 hours of classroom experience. PDS places BCU students in the same classroom for an entire year allowing the student to receive hands-on experience, giving them a head start in developing their abilities as educators. Her senior year, Nicole will take what she has learned in PDS and begin student teaching middle school science.

“The Briar Cliff education program is very unique. Some of my first classes were in different education classrooms watching and observing,” says Nicole. “This allowed me to see and understand what teaching different age levels was like. Each year after that, I was introduced to more and more opportunities for hands-on experience. By the time I graduate, I will know exactly what to expect and how to be a successful educator.”

Campus ministry programs like Catholic Daughters and bible studies helped Nicole deepen her faith. Nicole regularly attended student-led retreats and participated in local outreach and mass. “There are so many opportunities to explore and deepen your faith, I tried to take advantage of them as much as possible,” Nicole says. “Being able to grow in my faith is something that I will keep forever.”

Nicole’s advice for future Chargers is to put yourself out there. College can be daunting when you first arrive, but once you get involved it begins to feel like a second home.
