Nicole Hemelberg ('20), a psychology and biology major originally from Bogota, Colombia, found a home away from home when she chose Briar Cliff. “Briar Cliff University felt like home since the first day. The people here are what make the experience so special.”

Nicole always wanted to come to the United States for college, and an opportunity to play golf at Briar Cliff made that dream into a reality. As a freshman, she helped the BCU golf team advance to a national level. “It was a big accomplishment to represent the university in a national level. This was a once in a lifetime experience that I got to share with my teammates,” she said.

As a student athlete, Nicole made sure to work extra hard to get good grades and maintain her performance. "Student athletes need to be very responsible and organized since our season schedule is very busy," said Nicole. "But since I am playing a sport that I have always been passionate about, I enjoy it every single day.”

In addition to her coursework and golf practices, Nicole is also an academic peer mentor who helps her fellow Chargers achieve academic success and treasurer of the psychology club. It was important to Nicole to get involved on campus to meet new people and find opportunities to learn and grow.

After graduating, Nicole plans to pursue her master's in the United States before returning to Colombia to start her career as a psychiatrist. Even though it hasn't been easy to be so far from home, Nicole knows that it has been worth it. "Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great."
