"This experience has helped me with my graduate school applications, learning how to present under different situations (classroom vs research presentation) and to different audiences and how to adapt to these differences," said Kristin.

Kristin Twedt, a senior biology major from Canton, SD, discovered a passion for genetics and microbiology during her time at Briar Cliff. This passion will take her to medical school after graduation this May, where she'll study oncology as her primary focus.

During her final semester, Kristin prepared a presentation on her research for the Excellence Event, an annual event that celebrates academic excellence for undergraduate and graduate students at Briar Cliff. Twedt worked with biology professor Dr. Daniel Jung to examine the immunological perspective of how a fetus remains in the mother’s body until complete development through the upregulation of certain genes/enzymes to combat the mother’s immune system. Twedt's presentation, “Progesterone is a Potent Inducer of Indoleamine Dioxygenase (IDO) in Human Macrophages,” received top honors and gave her a valuable opportunity to present her research.

"This experience has helped me with my graduate school applications, learning how to present under different situations (classroom vs research presentation) and to different audiences and how to adapt to these differences," said Kristin.

Twedt’s interest in genetics and microbiology was sparked by her professors, Dr. Jung and Candice Coffin. Although both have tough classes, they were always there to encourage and drive her to success.

“Dr. Jung is an absolutely amazing professor. He goes out of his way to ensure every student is successful. He is encouraging, knowledgeable, and has an ability to get you interested. I would not have gotten through these four years without him," said Kristin. "Candice Coffin helped me find my interests through her genetics and microbiology courses. She was the driving force that helped me find the abilities I didn't know I had."
