Ikram Omar

Step out of your comfort zone and be as involved as possible. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Born and raised in Kenya, Sioux City became Ikram Omar's ('19) home when she moved to the United States during her junior year of high school. She knew that she wanted to stay close to home for college, which made Briar Cliff the perfect choice.

Staying in her hometown for college didn't stop Ikram from finding new opportunities to get involved around campus and in the community. She serves as president of Women of Color, and is also involved with Briar Cliff Student Government, Pre-Professional Health Club, and Science Club. She says that Briar Cliff's small campus gave her the courage to step out of her comfort zone and get involved, something she might have been too intimidated to do at a larger school.

A biology major with a minor in psychology, Ikram plans to attend a physician assistant program after graduating. She knew she wanted to help people after witnessing the need for healthcare in Kenya. "I wanted to grow up and be able to ease their pain," she said. She chose to pursue a career as a PA because of the ability to rotate between specialities and help more people.

For freshmen and new students at Briar Cliff, Ikram shared this advice: "Step out of your comfort zone and be as involved as possible. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it," she says. "We are very lucky to have these resources available to us, and everyone at Briar Cliff is willing to work with a student who may be having a hard time."
