Esly Ovando

I am extremely happy I made the right decision to finish my education at a school that cares so much about me and my education. Thank you BCU for giving me the opportunity to turn my dreams into reality.

The first in her family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree, Esly Ovando (‘19) says she was welcomed with open arms to Briar Cliff.

“When I walk on campus, I am happy. I feel safe and welcomed,” says the transfer student from Western Iowa Tech Community College. “The teachers want me and others to grow in self-awareness and intellectual background.”

Double majoring in music and education, Esly has always had dreams of pursuing a career in music whether that be by inspiring those around her through teaching or ultimately singing on stages all over the world.

Esly auditioned for “The Voice” in 2016, nearly passing through to the televised chair rounds. After student teaching, she plans on auditioning again for “The Voice” or for another music competition show like “The Four” or “American Idol.”

Last year, Esly told her professors of her pregnancy. She was surprised at their level of support and willingness to accommodate to her needs since she was so new to campus.

“Every single one of my teachers made sure I passed all my classes and that I was having a healthy pregnancy and then checked up on me after I had the baby,” Esly said.

Now a mother of two, Esly wants to make sure her family has everything she didn’t as a child and knows that an education will help her lay a solid foundation for their future. With the help of the Briar Cliff community and her scholarship donors, she can.

“I am extremely happy I made the right decision to finish my education at a school that cares so much about me and my education,” she adds. “Thank you BCU for giving me the opportunity to turn my dreams into reality.”
