"Some of the best people and opportunities come into your life in the most unexpected places," said Emily Sanburg ('18). For this Colorado native and first-generation college student, that unexpected place was Briar Cliff.

A graphic design major with a knack for social media, Emily took a chance on Briar Cliff even though it meant moving far away from her hometown of Montrose, CO. Being far away from her family was often difficult, but their support and the support of her volleyball teammates, friends, faculty, and staff helped her find the courage to stay and become part of the Briar Cliff community.

"I am so thankful for Desiree and Dillon Beckmann, Carly Hanson, Jessica Welter, Ricky Miranda, Laura Barry, Kelsey Beiermann, Michael Crowley, Shannon Beller, Judy Thompson, the four years of close volleyball teammates and coaches, all of the past and current graphic design majors, and many other people," said Emily.

During her senior year, Emily helped bring the Senior Class Legacy project to life alongside a group of dedicated seniors committed to enhancing the campus for current and future Chargers. The group reached their fundraising goal and gained valuable experience working as a team. "It was crazy to see everyone chip in and accomplish something that will make Briar Cliff even more special," she said.

Another senior year project that Emily enjoyed was her senior graphic design project. Inspired by the documentary "Chasing Coral," she designed swimwear and print materials that featured oceanic illustrations and information on the state of the coral reefs.

Now an alum, Emily is grateful that she took a leap of faith and chose Briar Cliff. For new and current Chargers, she offered this advice: "Work hard no matter what, and write evrything down if you're extremely forgetful! Oh, and don't spend all your money at Stone Bru."
