Carlye Polacek ('18), a biochemistry major from Boyden, IA, chose Briar Cliff because it felt like home. "It was small enough that it was possible for me to get to know a lot of different people, but I was able to have my independence as well," said Carlye.

Careers in STEM fields are often challenging, and biochemistry is no exception. But Carlye wasn't discouraged by difficult classes or projects because of her supportive professors. "The professors were great at helping me understand difficult concepts. They allowed me the opportunity to expand my horizons on certain subjects in my field," she said.

As a first-generation college student, Carlye's college experience held a special place in her heart and in her family's. "It means a lot to my family to be graduating from college because my parents wanted me to have the best chance to succeed as I could possible have."

After graduating, Carlye plans to take additional classes to prepare for pharmacy school next year. A lifelong learner, she's excited about exploring the world of STEM and contributing to the future of scientific advancement. "I chose to pursue a career in the STEM field because it's always changing and becoming more advanced," she said. "It makes me happy to be in a field that could change the world."

As her time at Briar Cliff comes to a close for now, Carlye is thankful to have been part of a community where helping others was a priority. "I think the biggest lesson you learn being at Briar Cliff is that you can always find a helping hand."
