Move-In Essentials: What to Pack (and What to Leave at Home)

As you prepare for your arrival at Briar Cliff University, we want to help make your transition to campus life as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Packing for college can be both exciting and overwhelming, so we've put together a comprehensive guide to ensure you're ready for your new home away from home. Below, you’ll find a list of recommended items to bring, as well as those best left at home, to help you settle in comfortably, safely, and in line with university policies.

What to Pack

Connect with Your Roommate First
Before you begin packing, reach out to your assigned roommate. Discuss what each of you plans to bring to avoid duplication of large items. For example, only one mini-refrigerator is permitted per room, and two futons can quickly crowd a small space.

Clothing for All Seasons
Iowa weather is known for its unpredictability. Temperatures can shift dramatically from one day to the next, so pack clothing appropriate for a wide range of conditions—from warm, sunny days to cold, snowy mornings. Fortunately, our campus features underground tunnels to help you navigate winter weather comfortably.

Hangers
To keep your room organized, bring an ample supply of hangers. We recommend plastic over wire hangers for safety and durability—especially when you’re in a rush to get to class.

Laundry Supplies
Be sure to pack a laundry hamper or basket, along with detergent and any other laundry essentials. Having a designated place for clothes will help you keep your space neat and efficient. The cost to do laundry at BCU is already included in the cost of your room - so no spare change is needed!

Additional Seating (Optional)
Consider bringing a futon, which fits well beneath a rented loft bed and serves as a versatile piece of furniture for studying, relaxing, or hosting guests. Folding lawn chairs are also a budget-friendly and space-saving option.

Fan
Alverno Hall and most of Noonan Hall do not have air conditioning in the individual rooms. A fan is highly recommended, especially during the warmer months. Air-conditioned lounges are available and provide a comfortable place to study. You may also request approval to bring an air conditioning unit for your room.

Iron
There will be occasions when dressing professionally is necessary—whether for presentations, interviews, or campus events. An iron can help you make a strong first impression.

Bedding
Mattresses are provided, but students are responsible for bringing their own linens, including sheets, pillows, blankets, and mattress protectors.

Shower Essentials
Pack a shower caddy, flip-flops or shower shoes, and bath towels. These items will make your trips to and from the communal restrooms much more manageable.

Mini-Refrigerator
Each room may have one mini-refrigerator, not exceeding five cubic feet, and it must operate on a standard 110-volt outlet.

Power Strips
Bring a surge-protected power strip with an on/off switch, a 15-amp circuit breaker, and a grounded (three-prong) plug. Extension cords are not permitted, so this is a safe and approved alternative.

Television
While a small TV is welcome, we recommend keeping it reasonably sized to conserve space. Larger screens are better suited for upperclassman housing, such as Baxter–DiGiovanni Hall.

Decorative Items
Personalize your room with posters and photographs that reflect your interests. Please ensure all decorations are appropriate for a shared academic environment.

Reusable Coffee Mug
Charged, our on-campus coffee shop, offers a variety of drinks—and using a reusable mug is both convenient and environmentally conscious.

Microwave
A small microwave can be a great addition to your room and is perfect for preparing quick meals or snacks.

Message Board
Consider bringing a dry-erase board or door message board. These are helpful for communicating with your roommate or hallmates and are a fun way to express yourself.

What Not to Pack

Live Plants (Unless You’re Confident)
While plants can brighten up a space, they require consistent care. Unless you’re sure you can maintain them, it’s best to leave them at home. Campus landscaping already offers plenty of greenery to enjoy.

Toasters, Hot Plates, and Toaster Ovens
These appliances are not permitted due to fire safety regulations. All residence halls include access to communal kitchens for your cooking needs.

Electric Grills and Halogen Lamps
Also prohibited for safety reasons. Halogen lamps, in particular, pose a risk of overheating or shattering.

Candles
Open flames are not allowed in residence halls. Flameless LED options are a safe and effective alternative for ambiance.

Homemade Lofts and Water Beds
Briar Cliff does not permit homemade lofts or water beds. Loft beds may be rented through the university's approved provider if desired.

Printers
With nearly all coursework submitted electronically and printers available in the library and campus computer labs, bringing a personal printer is unnecessary.

Pets
Pets are not allowed in the residence halls. Students requiring an emotional support animal must complete the formal approval process with the appropriate documentation.

Airsoft, BB Guns, or Similar Items
These items are strictly prohibited on campus, regardless of intent or function.
