Briar Cliff University partners with the University of North Dakota to Launch Engineering Dual-Degree Program

May 22, 2025

(Sioux City, Iowa – May 22, 2025) Briar Cliff University (BCU) is proud to announce a new partnership with the University of North Dakota (UND) to offer a dual-degree engineering program, set to begin in Fall 2025. This innovative collaboration offers Briar Cliff students the opportunity to pursue degrees in electrical, civil, mechanical, and chemical engineering while remaining in the supportive academic community of BCU.

“This partnership combines the academic strengths of both institutions, delivering a rigorous and immersive education that prepares students to excel in diverse industries and innovate on a global scale,” said Mark Rossi, Provost and Vice-President of Academic and Student Affairs at Briar Cliff University.

During their first year at BCU, students in the pre-engineering program will complete required foundational coursework in mathematics, physics, and computer science. Optional courses in biology and chemistry are also available to support students’ individual interests or career goals. Beginning in their second year, students will start taking online engineering courses through UND.

Participants in the dual-degree program remain eligible to participate in athletics, music, and other student programs at Briar Cliff. Upon completion of the program, students will earn both a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from BCU and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from UND.

For those pursuing a degree in electrical engineering, the plan is a five-year track entirely based at BCU. Students seeking civil, mechanical, or chemical engineering will follow a five-year track based at BCU but will attend summer sessions hosted by UND. These in-person summer sessions are designed to provide hands-on, lab-based experiences.

A key feature of this partnership is that engineering courses at UND will be included in a student’s tuition at Briar Cliff, ensuring a seamless process for students. Importantly, students enrolled in the program can benefit from tutoring, advising, and career services from both institutions, further enhancing their academic journey and preparation for the workforce.

This dual-degree program is not only academically rigorous but also highly affordable. Most students at Briar Cliff receive institutional scholarships that substantially reduce the cost of attendance. That means students in the program can now earn an engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution at a fraction of the cost typically associated with such programs.

The program is open to both current and incoming students, providing new pathways for those interested in one of the most sought-after fields in higher education today. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects steady growth in engineering fields over the next ten years, with strong salaries and career opportunities across public and private sectors.

“This is a significant milestone for Briar Cliff as we continue to explore innovative partnerships that meet the evolving demands of today’s students,” said Dr. Matthew Draud, President of Briar Cliff University. “Engineering is one of the most in-demand career fields, and this dual-degree program allows students to receive a high-quality education while preparing for impactful careers."
