May 14, 2025

(Sioux City, Iowa – May 14, 2025) Briar Cliff University is excited to announce the 2025 recipients of the Bishop Scholarship. The Bishop Scholarship, valued at $30,000, is funded by the Diocese of Sioux City and distributed over four years at $7,500 per year. One scholarship is reserved for a student majoring in education who plans on teaching at a Catholic school within the Diocese of Sioux City and meets all scholarship requirements.

Starting in the 2025-26 academic year, the two new Bishop Scholars are Alaina Beitelspacher and Desirae Dreckman. Beitelspacher, of Le Mars, is a student at Gehlen Catholic School and a parishioner of All Saints Parish. Dreckman, of Le Mars, is also a student at Gehlen and a member of All Saints.

“At Briar Cliff, we are proud to support students who embody academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to their faith,” said Dr. Matthew Draud, President of Briar Cliff University. “The Bishop Scholarship reflects our mission to empower students in their education and faith journey, and we are thrilled to welcome Alaina Beitelspacher and Desirae Dreckman as this year’s recipients.”

Beitelspacher is a member of Gehlen’s honor society, and she’s also been involved in many teams, including the dance team, band and cheer squad, as well as Gehlen’s Christian Leadership Team. She is part of the Students for Life group, has helped lead the Vacation Bible School at her parish, and has participated in Steubenville Conferences. She plans on majoring in biology.

Dreckman has been involved in choir, speech, theater, and Students for Life at Gehlen. Additionally, she serves on the Christian Leadership Team, where she leads prayers and gives a witness talk to her peers. She regularly attends the parish discipleship group and has been involved in special projects at All Saints, such as the Live Nativity. She plans on majoring in elementary education.

Briar Cliff University congratulates Alaina and Desirae on this well-deserved honor and looks forward to supporting their continued growth as scholars, leaders, and faith-filled individuals. The Bishop Scholarship not only recognizes their achievement but also invests in a future shaped by service, education, and Catholic values.
