Sisters of St. Francis Expand Support for Briar Cliff Education Majors Through Endowed Scholarships
October 23, 2025
(Sioux City, Iowa – October 23, 2025) Briar Cliff University has announced the establishment and expansion of two endowed scholarships supporting students pursuing degrees in education. The Sr. Ruth Schock Endowed Scholarship has been increased to $100,000, and the newly created Franciscan Educators Endowed Scholarship has been established at $100,000.
The Sr. Ruth Schock Endowed Scholarship, named in honor of Sister Ruth, continues her legacy of dedication to teaching and service. Originally endowed at $34,000, the fund’s growth more than doubles its long-term impact, ensuring future generations of education majors receive meaningful financial support.
The Franciscan Educators Endowed Scholarship celebrates the many Sisters who have served in Briar Cliff’s Education Department and reflects the University’s ongoing commitment to forming compassionate, service-minded educators. A new plaque honoring these Sisters will be displayed within the department.
Both scholarships will be awarded in Fall 2026, each providing approximately $5,000 to full-time education majors in good standing who demonstrate financial need and embody the University’s Franciscan values through service to others.
“These scholarships are a lasting investment in the future of education,” said Dr. Theresa Engle, Chair of the Education Department at Briar Cliff University. “They honor the legacy of those who have shaped Briar Cliff’s Franciscan tradition of excellence in teacher preparation and ensure our students can continue that legacy for years to come.”
Endowed scholarships like these live in perpetuity, creating ongoing opportunities for students and reflecting the generosity of donors who believe in Briar Cliff’s mission.
