Briar Cliff Announces 2026 Bishop’s Scholars

(Sioux City, Iowa – March 24, 2026) Briar Cliff University is proud to welcome the 2026 recipients of the Bishop’s Scholarship, recognizing three high school seniors from the Diocese of Sioux City for their academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to their Catholic faith.

The 2026 Bishop’s Scholars are Emily Grell of Danbury, Corvin Griffin of Holstein, and Sindy Rios of Sioux City.

Each recipient will receive $7,500 annually and may renew the scholarship for up to four years by maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0, totaling $30,000 in scholarship support during their time at Briar Cliff.

“Briar Cliff is proud to welcome these outstanding students who have already demonstrated leadership, service, and a deep commitment to their faith,” said Dr. Matthew Draud, President of Briar Cliff University. “The Bishop's Scholarship recognizes young people who embody the values of the Diocese of Sioux City and the Franciscan mission of Briar Cliff. We look forward to supporting their academic journeys and the positive impact they will have on our campus community.”

Emily Grell – Danbury

Emily Grell, a member of St. Therese of Lisieux Parish who attends St. Mary’s Church in Danbury, is homeschooled and will graduate from MVAOCOU.

Grell has been active in 4-H, serving as her club’s President and Vice President of the county council. She has earned varsity letters in track and cross country and was recognized as the 2025 Iowan of the Day at the Iowa State Fair, as well as Miss Congeniality at the Monona County Fair.

Within her parish, Grell is active in youth group and faith formation. She serves as a lector and altar server and has also assisted with Vacation Bible School.

She plans to major in Elementary Education at Briar Cliff.

Corvin Griffin – Holstein

Corvin Griffin, a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Holstein, will graduate this spring from Ridge View High School.

During high school, Griffin was involved in the speech program, student senate, and school musicals. He served as President of his junior class and acted as master of ceremonies at various school events, including coronation. He also volunteered in the community as a softball announcer.

At his parish, Griffin participates in the religious education program and assists with classes and Vacation Bible School. He serves as a lector and minister of hospitality and has been involved in youth group fundraising efforts.

Griffin plans to major in Accounting at Briar Cliff.

Sindy Rios – Sioux City

Sindy Rios, a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Sioux City, will graduate this spring from Bishop Heelan High School.

At Bishop Heelan, Rios has been active in soccer, cheerleading, art club, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Student Council, and the Peer Mentor Club. She has volunteered with organizations including Special Olympics, Crusaders for Life, the Siouxland District Health Department, and Catholic Charities.

At Sacred Heart Parish, she serves as a lector and helps organize the Siouxland Youth Group.

Rios will major in Psychology at Briar Cliff.
