July 21, 2023

Briar Cliff University announced the 2023 recipients of the Bishop’s Scholarship. The Bishop’s Scholarship is awarded to graduating high school seniors who belong to a Catholic parish in the Diocese of Sioux City. This year's recipients are Derek Louis Scheuring and Sophie Ruden.

Scheuring, a native of Defiance, Iowa, is a St. Peter’s Parish member and has been an Altar server and lector. He assists in the yearly picnic fundraisers, waiting tables, and operating rides and games for children. “I chose Briar Cliff because of the university’s Catholic beliefs, the coaching staff on the football team. I’m positive it is a place where I can thrive,” said Scheuring. “I am looking forward to getting to know new people and playing football at The Cliff!” Scheuring held a 3.86 GPA while receiving honor roll and finishing top ten in his class. He intends to major in elementary education.

Ruden, a native of Le Mars, Iowa, graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School and was a member of the Christian Leadership Team, Gehlen Catholic Honor Society, and Students for Life. She was a three-sport athlete, making academic all-state for volleyball, and the all-conference academic team in both volleyball and basketball. “It felt like home when I visited,” said Ruden. “I knew it would be a good school to continue my education while still growing in my faith.” Ruden intends to major in nursing and participate in track and field.
