Poverty Simulation: Open Walk‑In Opportunity

Curious about what life is like for someone managing day‑to‑day on a tight budget? Join us this Friday morning for a poverty simulation facilitated by Iowa Community Action. While the event is primarily for social work students, a few extra slots are available for walk‑in participants.

During the simulation, you’ll assume a “role” of a person or family living with limited means. Over several short “weeks,” you’ll make choices about work, bills, food, transportation, childcare, and more. At the end, we’ll debrief together to unpack insights and reflect on structural challenges.

Why attend?

  • Gain empathy and awareness of the daily decisions people in poverty face

  • Deepen your understanding of systemic barriers and resource limitations

  • Participate in conversation about change and community impact

Details:

  • Date & Time: Thursday, 11:00 AM –1:00 PM

  • Location: St. Francis Center, Stark Student Center

  • Open to all (space permitting)

  • No prior experience necessary

We hope you’ll join us for this eye‑opening, interactive learning experience.
