Dear Briar Cliff Community:
I wanted to share the latest update of the facts surrounding the incident that occurred overnight in Alverno Hall, as confirmed by the police. I understand and recognize our first priority is to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff.
- We now know there were three individuals who gained entry into Alverno Hall around 1:00 a.m. this morning. These individuals are not believed to be Briar Cliff students.
- Those individuals then walked to a dorm room looking for a specific individual. Words were exchanged and a lone gunshot was fired. Thankfully, no one was injured.
- The three individuals left campus and have yet to be apprehended. Video surveillance of these individuals, a description of their vehicle, and access entry data has been shared with the Sioux City Police Department.
- For safety reasons and out of abundance of caution for all other students, faculty and staff, the individual who was targeted is no longer on campus, pending the police investigation.
We are cooperating fully with the Sioux City Police Department as they investigate this incident and we appreciate all their efforts. We have increased patrol on campus, and we are in the process of implementing additional security measures.
I would ask everyone on campus to exercise a higher degree of safety and caution. As a reminder, please do not let anyone who does not have their University identification card into a residence hall, unless escorted by a Briar Cliff student or employee. If you see something that is of concern, if you need assistance, or an escort across campus, please contact campus security immediately by calling (712) 898-1888.
We appreciate all those who have come forward with information critical to the investigation and the assistance of our Campus Security team and the Sioux City Police Department.
