ESCI 412 - Field Botany

An investigation of the taxonomy and classification of vascular plants

Biologists or environmental scientists may acquire a greater appreciation for the intricacies of natural world through the identification and recognition of vascular plants. Ideally this course should be an enjoyable way to become personally involved with the natural world and to be comfortable with it. Briar Cliff students should also develop a new way of observing nature and appreciating the outdoors. Those desiring to make with making a contribution by saving imperiled species and habitats, or by conducting field research will benefit from this course.

Field botany builds awareness.

This course will cover:

  • pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and selected families within the major subclasses of flowering plants
  • pertinent topics including nomenclature, flowering plant reproduction, biosystematics, and the history of classification systems
  • spring flora of the Siouxland area

Grade based on:

  • three lecture tests
  • mini paper
  • specimen label
  • plant collection
  • indoor lab quiz
  • field quiz

This course includes a long weekend (4-day) trip to the Arkansas Ozarks in April.
