Patrick Hauer, PT, EdD, MHS joined BCU DPT in June 2015. He received his BS in Physical Therapy from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas in 1988. He went on to receive an MHS in Physical Therapy from the University of Indianapolis in 1996 and his EdD in Educational Administration from the University of South Dakota in 2002. Dr. Hauer is currently a tenured Full Professor of Physical Therapy and Assistant Program Director at Briar Cliff University’s DPT program. Prior to coming to BCU DPT, Dr. Hauer was an Associate Professor at the University of South Dakota, where he taught for 17 years. In addition to his role as an academician, Dr. Hauer has practiced in a multitude of settings including department Director, inpatient, outpatient, home health, work hardening, home health, and long-term care. He is certified in Graduate Clinical Pathology through the University of Massachusetts, certified in Level 2 Dry Needling, a Certified Geriatric Care Professional, certified with the American Heart Association and American Red Cross CPR/AED BLS for the Healthcare Provider Instructor, a certified American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response Instructor, and a credentialed APTA Clinical Instructor.

Dr. Hauer is a physical therapist and educator who has focused on teaching cardiovascular and pulmonary, pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, orthotics and prosthetics, gait, emergency medical response/CPR/AED, and various musculoskeletal topics. Dr. Hauer continues to be the Course Coordinator for DPT 602: Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, DPT 643: Differential Diagnosis, DPT 642: Orthotics and Prosthetics, RHB 506: Pathophysiology, RHB 560: Rehabilitation Scholarly Project and RHB 660: Rehabilitation Scholarly Project. He is also a clinical instructor for the series of Clinical Correlation courses.

In the last 10 years, Dr. Hauer has been a co-author on 4 peer-reviewed publications; he has been a primary author or co-author on 23 peer-reviewed local, state, or national professional presentations, and he has been involved in 4 successful grants in the last 10 years. Dr. Hauer’s research interests are varied encompassing CV&P examination and intervention, EMG of upper and lower extremities during testing and activity, and the use of a novel physical therapy modality in the treatment of subcutaneous calcific deposits. Dr. Hauer continues to maintain clinical competence by attending related continuing education courses and providing physical therapy services to patients on the acute medical floor, the special care unit, and the intensive care unit at St. Luke’s Unity Point Hospital in Sioux City, IA. He also participates in the BCU DPT pro bono clinic providing his knowledge base to students. Dr. Hauer is licensed in IA and SD and in the past has assisted numerous physical therapy providers with his diverse background with PRN coverage.

Dr. Hauer serves as the Program's Assistant Program Director, Assessment Committee chair, Admission Committee chair, and other Program-related committees. Dr. Hauer also serves as the BCU Promotion and Tenure chair. Outside of academia, Dr. Hauer has served in leadership roles on numerous committees at the state and national levels of various professional and community organizations. Dr. Hauer served for many years as a board member of Connections in Yankton, SD. This organization’s primary goal was to serve area adults with developmental disabilities. He also served as a board member for the Yankton Baseball Association and was a Mission Hill Township supervisor. Dr. Hauer has served as the American Physical Therapy Association South Dakota Chapter Treasure for 2 terms (4 years), President-Elect for one term (2 years), and President for one term (2 years). During his time as President, he was successful in getting needed changes to the Profession’s State Practice Act and getting dry needling added to the PT Practice Act via the legislative process. His commitment to the profession is one of the many reasons Dr. Hauer was inducted into the APTA South Dakota Chapter Hall of Fame in 2013 and APTA South Dakota Chapter Physical Therapist of the Year in 2018.
