Erin Vogel, PT, DPT, OCS, WCC, AIB-PT is an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at Briar Cliff University. She has been employed as a core faculty member at BCU since May 2019. Dr. Vogel is licensed as a PT in Iowa and South Dakota.
Dr. Vogel obtained her Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD in 2009 with honors of highest academic achievement. She has been employed as a staff physical therapist at Sanford Vermillion Hospitals since 2009 practicing in the areas of outpatient, inpatient, long-term care, and home health physical therapy services. During her time at Sanford, she received a Friend of Nursing nomination in 2012 as well as a $ 1,000 grant to purchase the Lite Gait system for her department in 2013. Along with being a staff Physical Therapist, she has been a clinical instructor for students for several years with achievements of credentialed clinical instructor and clinical assistant professor at the University of South Dakota. Dr. Vogel is also employed as a part-time physical therapist at a privately owned outpatient orthopedic clinic and continues to mentor students in Briar Cliff’s pro bono clinic.
In 2017, Dr. Vogel became an APTA Board-Certified Specialist in Orthopedics and continues to maintain this certification. She currently practices 20 hours per month between SanfordVermillion and the outpatient orthopedic clinic utilizing her orthopedic specialist skills. She completed Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Certification in 2020 in which she currently utilizes within our pro bono clinic and in her practice at SanfordVermillion. She completed Wound Care Certification in 2020 and currently practices wound care in a hospital-based clinic along with a Vestibular Rehabilitation certification in 2021, which she currently utilizes within the hospital-based clinic, outpatient orthopedic clinic, and pro bono clinic. Lastly, she was certified in Level 1 Dry Needling in 2022 and currently utilizes it in the hospital-based clinic, outpatient orthopedic clinic, and pro bono clinic. She continues to maintain competency in these areas by attending continuing education courses within these areas and maintaining certification. Overall, this demonstrates contemporary expertise within each of these areas of practice.
Prior to her position as Assistant Professor at Briar Cliff, Dr. Vogel had teaching experience through the University of South Dakota Physical Therapy Program as a lab assistant for a patient skills care course and an adjunct instructor for their business course, as well as through Briar Cliff University as a lab instructor for undergraduate anatomy and an adjunct instructor for a graduate and undergraduate biomechanics course.
Scholarly, Dr. Vogel presented six peer-reviewed abstracts at regional and national professional conferences on a variety of topics, including soccer injury prevention, reliability of a physical therapy practical evaluative tool, documentation reporting within a pro bono clinic, ankle stability in collegiate volleyball athletes, median nerve morphology using diagnostic ultrasound, and effects of exercise on stress in physical therapy students. She has also been recently published in 2022 in the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography regarding her median nerve research. Along with her scholarship, Dr. Vogel has obtained numerous grant funding through Briar Cliff University for her research presentations totaling approximately $ 2700.
Dr. Vogel has served in leadership roles over the years within her state profession, including APTA-SD Secretary, President-Elect, and current president. She has tirelessly campaigned within her state profession for several legislative bills, including continuing education requirements for licensed therapists, the addition of dry needling to the SD Practice Act, PT compact privileges, and campaigning for an independent licensing board. She has served her community as an instructor for English as a Second Language, continues to serve her community by being a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and is involved in various volunteer activities for her children’s school and church.
