SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities (AFCU) has elected Beverly A. Wharton, president of Briar Cliff University, to the AFCU Board of Directors. Beginning in 2014, President Wharton will serve a three-year term through the association's annual meeting in 2017.
“I am deeply honored to accept this appointment in support of the association’s member institutions’ commitment to providing higher education within a Catholic Franciscan perspective,” she said. Among her responsibilities on the AFCU Board, President Wharton will assist in directing the association’s activities, including strategic plans, budgets and fundraising.
President Wharton came to Briar Cliff in June of 2001 as interim President and took the helm as the ninth president of Briar Cliff in 2003. President Wharton has enabled Briar Cliff to be a catalyst for innovations in learning, working and living. Most notably, the institution advanced from college to university status. With this transition came many enhancements, including the transformation of academic programs with the launch of BCU’s first doctorate degree and expansion of master’s level programs.
During her tenure, President Wharton has continued to emphasize and foster the Franciscan values on which the institution was founded by establishing partnerships with local organizations and businesses to address the needs of the underserved and the environment.
Briar Cliff University is a Catholic institution with an enrollment of more than 1,100 students from 31 states and nine countries. Students are educated in the Franciscan tradition of excellence in the liberal arts and career preparation in an environment of care, compassion and service.
