Longtime Briar Cliff faculty members to retire

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Sister Shirley Fineran and Chuck Shaffer are retiring this year after decades of service at Briar Cliff University. Fineran and Shaffer have both worked at Briar Cliff for over 20 years.

Sister Shirley Fineran, O.S.F., assistant professor of social work and Director of Field Education, has served at Briar Cliff for 28 years. She received her B.A. at Briar Cliff and M.S.W. at the University of Illinois. Beyond her impact as a teacher and mentor, Fineran has been an active volunteer in peace, justice and women’s issues for more than 50 years. She is a founding member of several Siouxland organizations including the Food Bank of Siouxland, Siouxland Habitat for Humanity and Siouxland Unidad Latina, and has served on the boards for the Boys and Girls Home and Family Services, Leadership Siouxland and United Way in addition to her work with the Mary J. Treglia Community House. Sister Shirley helped found the Siouxland Coalition Against Human Trafficking, a nonprofit organization that works to abolish human trafficking in the tri-state area, and she established Lila Mae’s House to provide a space for women who have been trafficked to live safely and learn valuable life and professional skills.

Chuck Shaffer, professor of mathematics and chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, came to Briar Cliff in 1975. He received his B.S. in mathematics from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and his M.S. and Ph.D. in statistics from Montana State University. In addition to teaching and advising, Shaffer has been the chair of the department several times, has served on various strategic faculty committees and was recognized with the Paul and Frances Duff Pursuit of Excellence Award and Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award. Outside of The Cliff, he has also assisted with data analysis for community organizations like the Sioux City Community School District, State of Iowa Department of Human Services and Sioux City Human Rights Commission.
