Sioux City, IA – Briar Cliff University’s “The Human Library” was selected as the 2018 Association of Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASACCU) Best Practices for Mission Integration for diversity and integration.
The program was chosen for its direct impact on student learning and integration of Catholic identity and mission.
Angela Houk, Head of Public and Research Services, and Jenny Tobin, Director of Counseling Services, were instrumental in planning the event and program award nomination. Both will travel to this summer's ASACCU annual conference at the University of San Diego to receive the award on Briar Cliff’s behalf.
The Human Library exposes Briar Cliff students to individuals of diverse backgrounds, sharing their stories of prejudice and discrimination. A variety of topics are highlighted during the event including drug addiction, immigration, poverty, dementia and more. This year more than 50 individuals served as “books” for the Human Library, making Briar Cliff’s event the largest in the state of Iowa.
