Sioux City, Iowa--Beverly Wharton left an influential footprint on Briar Cliff University students and the campus facility. This week, Briar Cliff honored Wharton by renaming the University’s learning center in her name.
Located in Heelan Hall on Briar Cliff’s campus, the Beverly A. Wharton Learning Center serves as the main academic hub for the University’s undergraduate programs. The facility features the latest in technology, state-of-the-art laboratories and expanded classrooms.
“Bev was a remarkable and transformational leader for Briar Cliff. She committed herself to helping our students succeed and that commitment shows in the endless list of accomplishments achieved during Bev’s presidency,” says Sr. Kate Katoski, Chair of Briar Cliff’s Board of Trustees. “The learning center is a visible reminder of Bev’s leadership in enhancing the learning environment for our students.”
Wharton served as president of Briar Cliff for 15 years, the longest of any presidents in the University’s history, before her retirement in 2016. The learning center was completed during Wharton’s tenure as part of a multi-million dollar renovation on Briar Cliff’s iconic Heelan Hall.
During the learning center ceremony, the Briar Cliff Board of Trustees also presented Wharton with the President Emerita designation for her exceptional contributions to Briar Cliff. It is the second distinguished recognition for Wharton in recent weeks. Wharton and her husband Jim received the W. Edwards Deming Business Leadership and Entrepreneurial Excellence Award for their generosity and service to the community at the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Dinner last week.
