Public Services and Archives Librarian

Operation and Management | Collection Management | Training Student Workers

This position provides vital services to the Bishop Mueller Library and Briar Cliff University. Participates in library public services including instruction, programming, collection management, and training student workers. Responsible for the efficient operation and management of the University Archives.


  • Teaches information literacy sessions in collaboration with the University Librarian
  • Teach up to 6-credit hours per academic semester
  • Create web-based tutorials, training documents, and other instructional resources
  • In conjunction with library and university initiatives, plan and implement innovative library events and programming
  • Manage the library’s social media presence
  • Serve up to 10-hours per week as the campus archivist and help organize, maintain, and grow the university archives by processing archival materials in collaboration with the Technical Services/Interlibrary Loan Librarian, planning and completing digitization projects, developing policies and procedures concerning digital objects and metadata, establishing workflows, implementing appropriate standards and best practices, and ensuring the accessibility of unique materials through the development of discovery and/or exhibit platforms and the application of current metadata standards
  • Contribute to the profession through activities such as publications, presentations, and participating in professional organizations
  • Assist the Library Assistant in training student workers, who will open, close, and staff the front desk during all hours of operation
  • Support the Library Assistant in answering reference and technology-based questions with the aid of student workers
  • Assist with the selection and weeding of print materials and equipment
  • Recommend relevant policy/process changes to the University Librarian
  • Contribute to the mission of the University and library by serving on committees
  • Collect relevant statistics for reporting and assessment
  • Other duties as assigned by the University Librarian


  • A Master of Library/Information Science degree (MLIS or MLS) from an ALA accredited program
  • Effective time management skills, flexibility, and ability to manage several projects at one time
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Excellent technology and computer skills


  • Archives experience
  • Knowledge of archival standards, such as Dublin Core and EAD
  • Experience teaching college students
  • Prior reference experience
