Briar Cliff Leading the Way in Autism Education

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Briar Cliff University is now offering an Applied Behavior Analysis program with an emphasis in the study of autism.

The program is available to graduate students and is the first program of this kind in Iowa.

Students will complete part of their degree online, and the other portion they will spend working in the field.

Briar Cliff is also partnering with The Pier Center for Autism.

School officials say this program will not only be good for students, but Iowa as well.

"I think this first class to go through is a really important one for us because they're going to set the standard for everybody else. They're very excited to be in the program, and perhaps more than anything, they understand the real need that Iowa has for people like them," said Dr. Paul Olson, Chair of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences at BCU.

Olson says programs like this one are more common on the east coast, and the midwest as a whole is behind in autism studies.
