SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Briar Cliff University is proud to recognize the esteemed appointment earned by Dr. Sean Burton, Division Chair of Arts and Humanities, The Gilchrist Foundation Director and Associate Professor of Music. Dr. Burton has been appointed Chief Editor of Publications by the executive board of the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO). This national appointment is an honor for Dr. Burton, given the caliber of peer-professionals from which Burton was chosen.

Dr. Burton’s role serves two important functions for NCCO. He will serve as the Editor-in-Chief of The Choral Scholar, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal of the highest academic caliber. Additionally, Dr. Burton will manage the NCCO Choral Music Series, which serves as a publication venue for new choral music. Music selections will be vetted by a competitive submission/review process that Dr. Burton will lead.

Well-suited for this appointment, Dr. Burton brings a wealth of previous experience having authored one book and over fifty other publications. In addition, Dr. Burton’s commitment to new music, the long list of works he has commissioned and his active professional role at Briar Cliff University only further his qualifications to excel in this new role. Likewise, this appointment will bring fruitful returns to Briar Cliff University and the Siouxland community due to his exposure to choral diversity, new works of music and a national scale of high-caliber music submissions.

Deeply involved in the Sioux City musical community, Dr. Burton also serves as Director of Music at Grace United Methodist Church, Founding Artistic Director of the Siouxland Choral Artists, Sioux City’s only auditioned adult chamber choir, and Director of the Abu Bekr Chanters. Believing in the need for a broad knowledge of the arts and humanities, Dr. Burton concurrently feeds his passion to develop the talents of young musicians in his roles with Briar Cliff University.
