BCU Choral Music Camp Offers Free Public Concert

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – High school students enrolled in Briar Cliff University’s 27th Annual Pre-All-State Choral Music Camp will perform a free public concert at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at Grandview Park Band Shell (Leo Kucinsky Music Pavilion), Grandview Blvd., Sioux City.

The concert, which will conclude the choral music camp, will feature more than 270 choral singers from over 25 high schools, including Carroll Kuemper Catholic, Central Lyon, Charter Oak-Ute Community, Corning Community,  Le Mars Gehlen Catholic, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn,  Hull-Western Christian, Kingsley-Pierson High School, Lawton-Bronson, Lewis Central, Maple Valley-Anthon Otto, Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn, Panorama, Ridge View Community, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Sheldon Community, Sibley-Ocheydan Community, Sioux Center Community, Sioux City East, Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic, Sioux City North, Sioux City West, Spencer Community, Unity Christian and West Monona Community, among others.

Organized by BCU’s Department of Music, the intensive three-day camp, Aug. 4-7, will prepare high school students for the 2013 Iowa All-State Chorus auditions on Oct. 19, 2013.

Serving as the camp’s musical director will be Dr. Sean Burton, associate professor of music, director of choral activities and division chair of arts and humanities at Briar Cliff University. The camp coordinator will be Dr. Mary Day, O.S.F., associate professor of voice, diction and liturgy and music department chair at Briar Cliff.

The following will assist with the musical instruction:  Jean Hickman, adjunct instructor of jazz, University of Florida, Gainesville; Dr. Jeremy Owens, assistant professor of music, Briar Cliff University; Briar Cliff alumni John Flanery, assistant director of choral activities, University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, Miss; Brian Johnson, director of choral activities, Lewis Central High School, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Jayne Koch, director of music at First Lutheran Church, Sioux City; Christopher Miller, assistant choral director, Sioux City West High School; and Rachael Wragge, assistant director of choral activities, Bishop Heelan Catholic High School, Sioux City. BCU students will serve as camp counselors.
