For more than four decades, Poole has been a teacher, playwright, actor and director. He has given papers at scholarly meetings and published articles on local, regional, and Midwestern theatre history. He co-authored The Opera Houses of Iowa (Iowa State University Press, 1993) and "American Traveling Tent Theatre, 1900-1940: Rural and Small Town Tent Shows (including scripts of Popular Tent Theatricals)", (Mellen Press, 2014).
