Education

Dr. Owens holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he studied piano with Dr. David Worth. He continued graduate studies and completed both his Master of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he studied with Dr. Noel Engebretson.


About

Originally from the North Dakota, Dr. Owens spent five years prior to his arrival at Briar Cliff on the faculty at Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, where he served as Assistant Professor of Music. His duties at Blue Mountain College included teaching piano lessons (both privately and in a class-piano setting), music theory, music history, music appreciation, music literature, serving as the accompanist for student recitals and the Blue Mountain College Chorale, and serving as Music Director for campus theatrical productions. Off campus, he was the organist and music director for Ripley First Presbyterian Church and worked as rehearsal pianist for the local areas high school musical productions. Previous to working at Blue Mountain College, Dr. Owens worked as Staff Accompanist and Class Piano Instructor at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama, as well as an independent piano teacher in Alabama.

While living in Alabama, Dr. Owens received several honors, including winning the state MTNA Collegiate Artist Competition twice. Dr. Owens has served as an adjudicator for Mississippi regional and state Federation of Music Clubs and Music Teachers National Association piano competitions as well as for the regional and statewide Mississippi Baptist Keyboard Festival. In 2006, he was awarded the Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award for Blue Mountain College. He has given recitals in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, North Dakota, and Minnesota as a soloist as well as in collaboration with other musicians. This year, Dr. Owens had the privilege to be the featured soloist at the Mississippi Federation of Music Clubs State Convention. Dr. Owens is married to his wonderful wife, Sue Ann, and they share their time with their 6 year old Shih-Tzu, Mandy Lou.
