Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Minor in Theology
Students in a Catholic, liberal arts college have the right, privilege and responsibility to enter into the theological and philosophical modes of understanding reality, enabling them to become informed, articulate and involved persons, better prepared to understand God, themselves and the world around them. In keeping with the heritage of the college, special emphasis is given to the Roman Catholic tradition. However, offerings are available so that students from other religious backgrounds can also gain an appreciation of the place of religion in their lives.

Associate of Arts in Theology Requirements:
The two-year degree in theology provides a program centered in theology, with supportive study in philosophy, the humanities and the behavioral and natural sciences. An essential aspect of the program is off-campus practicum experience. The required courses include:

  • 6 term courses in Theology: 103, 104, 204, 206, and two elective courses 300 level or above.
  • 1 term course in Philosophy.
  • 6 different mini courses.
  • 11 term course electives designed to give the student a broad liberal education.

Bachelor of Arts in Theology Requirements:
THEO 101 or 102, 103, 104, 204, 206, 305, 401 and three electives, two of which must be numbered 300 or above. Theology majors satisfy the Religious and Ethical Foundation with PHIL 210 or 212, and PHIL 220 or 410. The Theology faculty will certify the general education service component and competencies in computer usage, moral/ethical reasoning, oral communication, research and writing in this major. All other degree requirements are outlined in the student catalog.

A student may choose to have a theology major with a specific emphasis by adding to the above courses as follows:

  • Pastoral Ministry: THEO 308; THEO 490; suggested mini courses in liturgy preparation, peer ministry, teaching religion
  • Religious Education: THEO 307; THEO 490 or EDUC 430; suggested minis in liturgy preparation and teaching religion
  • Liturgy: THEO 306; THEO 490; suggested applied music courses according to need and interest; suggested minis in liturgy preparation and chapel choir.
  • Youth Ministry: THEO 309; THEO 490; suggested mini courses in liturgy preparation and peer ministry
  • Peace and Justice: THEO 200 or THEO 321; THEO 490; suggested mini courses pertinent to the emphasis

Interdisciplinary major:
A combination of seven term courses in one of the disciplines, and five in the other. The sequence of courses must include THEO 103 or 104, THEO 206, THEO 204 or PHIL 210, THEO 305 or 401, PHIL 100 or 215, PHIL 300, 310 or 410. The entire sequence must include four courses numbered 300 or above. Interdepartmental major: in conjunction with another department. Requirements are developed with the cooperating department. If theology is one of the components in the interdepartmental major, the required theology courses include scripture, sacraments and morality. If philosophy is one of the components in the interdepartmental major, the required philosophy courses include PHIL 100 or 215, 210 or 212, and one from PHIL 300, 310 or 410.

Minor in Theology Requirements:
Consists of six term courses in theology including scripture, sacrament and morality courses for those who wish to enrich their own field of concentration with the Christian view of life or to qualify as a teaching area. At least one of the six courses must be numbered 300 or above.
