Social work is a helping profession. Social workers assess human problems and engage in problem-solving. The social worker understands the process of individual development and interaction with the social environment. The student's knowledge, values and skills are used in a professionally supervised practicum in a social agency during the senior year. This field experience of 480 clock hours is a significant dimension of the program.

The social work curriculum builds upon a general education foundation. It draws upon biological, psychological, and sociological knowledge, while developing the unique social work knowledge and skills needed for helping people manage problem situations.

The social work program has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education since l974.
