The R.N. to B.S.N. Option

The Department of Nursing offers an opportunity for registered nurses to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. The program is designed specifically for graduates of hospital diploma and associate degree nursing programs. Students must present evidence of a license to practice nursing in Iowa and of professional liability insurance currently in force in order to enroll in nursing courses with clinical components. These are filed in the Departmental office. The potential ability to give safe nursing care is a prerequisite for admission to the nursing major. 

Registered nurses, because of their previous learning in other settings, are considered transfer students on entry into the university. Previously earned academic credits may be applied to the B.S.N., and validation of prior learning occurs according to the appropriate option signed based on the Articulation Plan for Nursing Education.

Prior to the upper division nursing courses, the student must:
  • Present content from college course work or credit by examination equivalent to term courses in each of the following areas: Introductory Psychology PSYC 110; Sociology SOCY 124; Anatomy BIOL 221; Developmental Psychology PSYC 280;Physiology BIOL 222; Introduction to Microbiology BIOL 239
  • Meet with the chairperson of the department of nursing to evaluate your prior academic record, apply to Admissions for the Nursing Program.

II. The Upper Division Nursing Program Requires:

A. Nursing Courses

Six term-courses in nursing are required. These courses are: NURS 310, also 410, 415, 420, 435 and NURS 58/63IR.  A grade of "C" or above must be attained in both theory and clinical components of all term and IR nursingcourses, and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 maintained for progression in the program. Documentation of physical health status must be obtained prior to admission to the major andon file in the Health Office. Required immunizations must include hepatitis Bvaccination, or a signed waiver; and an annual Mantoux test; and second MMR, if the studentwas born after 1957, and proof of varicella immunity.

B. Required related coursesThe student’s total program for the degree should show evidence of content inthe following areas: 

1) Ethics PHIL 210, PHIL 212 or Christian Morality THEO 204 
2) Nutrition/Diet Therapy BIOL 240
3) Introduction to Writing WRTG 109
4) Basic Organic Chemistry CHEM 110
5) Elementary Statistics MATH 200
6) Upper Division Psychology

C. Foundations Courses

Two must be in the General Education Aesthetic Foundation, one theology course, one in the Integrative Foundation, one in the Historical Consciousness Foundation and one in the Multicultural Foundation.
