The Department of Nursing offers an opportunity for registered nurses to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. The program is designed specifically for graduates of hospital diploma and associate degree nursing programs. Students must present evidence of a license to practice nursing in Iowa or a compact state. The potential ability to give safe nursing care is a prerequisite for admission to the nursing major. 

Registered nurses, because of their previous learning in other settings, are considered transfer students on entry into the university. Previously earned academic credits may be applied to the B.S.N., and validation of prior learning occurs through the Iowa Articulation Plan for Nursing Education.

I. Prior to the upper division nursing courses, the student must:
  • Present content from college course work or credit by examination equivalent to courses in each of the following areas: PSYC 110 Introductory Psychology; SOCY 124 Sociology; BIOL 221 Anatomy; PSYC 280 Developmental Psychology;BIOL 222 Physiology; BIOL 239 Introduction to Microbiology 
  • Meet with the chairperson of the department of nursing to evaluate your prior academic record. Apply to Admissions for the Nursing Program.

II. The Upper Division Nursing Program Requires:

A. Nursing Courses

Six courses in nursing are required. These courses are: NURS 305, 310, 320, 410, 455 and 435.  A grade of "C" or above must be attained in both theory and clinical components of all nursing courses. Documentation of physical health status must be obtained prior to admission to the major and on file in the Health Office. Required immunizations must include hepatitis B vaccination, or a signed waiver; and an annual Mantoux test; and second MMR, if the studentwas born after 1957, and proof of varicella immunity.

B. Required Related Courses

The student’s total program for the degree should show evidence of content in the following areas: 

1) Ethics (PHIL 210, PHIL 212 or THEO 204) 
2) BIOL 240 Nutrition
3) WRTG 109 Introduction to Writing
4) CHEM 109 Chemistry for Health Sciences I
5) MATH 200 Elementary Statistics
6) Upper Division Psychology

C. Foundations and Competency Courses
Students must meet the following competency and intellectual foundation course requirements:

Foundations:
Aesthetics (2, 3 credit courses)
Multicultural (3 credits)
Historical Consciousness (3 credits)
Religion (3 credits)
Ethics (3 credits)
Global Foundation (3 credits)
Physical & Life Sciences (met with CHEM109)
Behavioral Sciences (met with PSYC110)

Franciscan Life (2 credits)

Competencies:
Quantitative Literacy (met with MATH200)
Second Language (waived)
Information Technology (1-3 credits)
Oral Communication (3 credits)

Briar Cliff's RN to BSN Program Features:
  • The nursing courses in the RN-BSN program are offered online.

  • A state-of-the-art-nursing curriculum that recognizes what you know and doesn't repeat what you have already studied.

    The nursing curriculum includes six nursing courses. The nursing courses focus on content that builds upon your previous nursing education and experience. These courses include content important to working with families experiencing complex health problems, community health issues, research, leadership, and a development of a theoretical basis for your nursing practice.

  • Flexible acceptance of transfer credits from other colleges.

    Briar Cliff College automatically accepts 30 credits of nursing from the student's basic nursing program.  Students are required to take at least their last 30 credit hours from Briar Cliff.  These 30 credits include 22 credits of nursing.

  • Financial aid for nurses who are working and cannot attend classes full time.

Over 70% of the students enrolled in the RN-BSN program receive financial aid. Financial aid may include scholarships, grants or loans. Additionally, Iowa residents attending Briar Cliff University may be eligible for the Iowa Tuition Grant. Eligible students can receive up to $4,000 per year!   • Online instruction with highly qualified faculty members.

The faculty at Briar Cliff University believe that facilitating your learning is their most important responsibility. We are committed to providing the highest quality teaching available. The nursing faculty share this commitment and come with extensive teaching and current nursing experience. Faculty are also available outside of class to assist you with academic and professional issues.


Financial Aid Information for RN-BSN Students
  • Over 70% of students enrolled in our RN-BSN option receive financial aid
  • Students are encouraged to mail in the Financial Aid form as soon as possible.
  • Financial aid awarded by Briar Cliff University for courses taken at Briar Cliff only.
  • Loans and Pell Grants can be used to finance summer courses, but are treated as a trailer to previous academic year.
  • Absolute deadline for the Iowa Tuition Grants: must be received in the processing center by the deadline, which is usually July 1 of each year, for the academic year starting the following September.
