study. Nursing theories are evaluated in the context of the theory-practice
relationship. Opportunity is provided for in-depth understanding of the
nursing process with emphasis on the Neuman Systems Model. Specific concepts
relevant to professional nursing practice are considered and applied in
analysis of both practice and education issues. Students apply these
theories as a framework to guide nursing care of client systems. Initial
validation of writing and oral communication competencies are addressed.

process to the family client system during the childbearing period. Clinical
experiences in acute care and community-based settings provide an
opportunity for the student to apply primary, secondary and tertiary
prevention as intervention to normal and high-risk family-client systems.
Prerequisites: NURS 325. (2:2) Spring

sem. hrs.
Provides the theoretical basis for application of the nursing process in
providing care to infants, children, adolescents, and their family systems
during the childrearing period. Clinical experiences in acute care and
community-based settings provide the student an opportunity to apply
primary, secondary and tertiary prevention as intervention to childrearing
family-client systems. Concurrent with NURS 235. (2:2) Winter
NURS 335 Nursing Process with the Ill Adult Client System II 4 sem.
hrs.
Expands the theoretical basis for application of the nursing process when
caring for the ill adult client with actual or potential system disruption.
Clinical experiences in the acute and critical care settings promote
implementation at all levels of prevention, with emphasis on secondary
prevention. The following client system disruptions are explored: fluid,
electrolyte, acid-base, respiratory, peripheral vascular, cardiovascular and
neurological. Prerequisites: NURS 235, Concurrent: NURS 325. (2:2) Winter
NURS 345 Nursing Process in Mental Health I 4 sem. hrs.
Utilizes the nursing process in secondary prevention as intervention to
assist the client system in attaining stability in the institutional
setting. The nursing process is utilized to support the lines of resistance
and to reduce symptomatology following a reaction to stressors.
Prerequisites: NURS 315, PSYC 360. (2:2) Spring
NURS 410 Nursing Process in the Community I 4 sem. hrs.
Provides for utilization of all levels of prevention as intervention to
assist the family client system to promote, restore and maintain stability.
Emphasis is on synthesis of public health and nursing interventions which
utilize family strengths and community resources to increase the lines of
resistance of the family system and to attain and maintain optimal patterns
of health. Clinical experiences are in the home setting and assist the
family to identify and allay risk factors associated with known stressors
and to strengthen the flexible lines of defense. Prerequisites: NURS 300
courses. (2:2) Fall
NURS 415 Nursing Research 3 sem. hrs.
Provides an overview of the types, methods and uses of research in
developing new nursing knowledge and nursing practice with all client
systems and all levels of prevention. The course emphasizes the knowledge
and skills needed to critically evaluate and apply clinical research studies
to all client systems in all settings. Students have the opportunity to
develop a nursing research utilization proposal that provides for
application of the principles of research evaluation, change theory and
utilization of nursing of nursing research in practice. Prerequisites:
Nursing major with senior status and MATH 200. Winter
NURS 420 Nursing Process in the Community II 4 sem. hrs.
Provides for utilization of all levels of prevention to assist the community
as a client system to promote, restore and maintain stability. Community
health programs, projects, and agencies are investigated. The nursing
process is applied to the community as a client system incorporating public
health concepts. The governmental, political and legal influences on
community client systems are explored. Clinical experiences in a variety of
community settings provide an opportunity for students to study risk factors
associated with known stressors and to strengthen the flexible lines of
defense. Prerequisites: NURS 410. (2:2) Winter
