Requirements for a Major and Minor

The programs in mathematics promote the development of skills in logical reasoning, problem solving, data analysis, and communication of ideas. The major program is designed to strike a balance between theory and application, preparing students for entry into a variety of careers in business and industry, scientific research, the teaching profession, and graduate study.

The use of technology is integrated throughout the mathematics curriculum via graphing calculators, computer algebra systems, and statistical software on the BCU network. Software currently available includes Derive 6, Geometer's Sketchpad, Minitab, and Microsoft Excel, all running under Windows XP.

Students intending to major in mathematics should have successfully completed three or four years of high school mathematics including some trigonometry.  Students begin their major program with either MATH 217 Calculus I or MATH 225 Discrete Mathematics.  Those whose background is inadequate for these courses should take MATH 112 Elementary Functions as additional preparation. Credit by examination is available for the first two courses in the Calculus sequence.

Major

A total of 46 credit hours is required for a major in mathematics.
1.  Mathematics core sequence (25 hrs):  MATH 217, 218, 219, 225, 245, 344, 360, and 405
2.  Mathematics electives (9 hrs):  three courses chosen from MATH 348, 350, 361, 445, and 475
3.  Independent research (2 hrs)
4.  Support courses (10 hrs):  CSCI 201, 202; PHYS 231

For a mathematics major with a 7-12 teaching endorsement, course work must include MATH 440 and 445. Mathematics majors not anticipating a career in teaching are strongly advised to take a minor or second major in either Computer Science or Business.

Minor

MATH 217, 218, and 11 credit hours in MATH courses chosen from MATH 200 and courses numbered above 218. For a mathematics minor with a 7-12 teaching endorsement, course work must include MATH 225, 405, 440, 445, CSCI 201, and either MATH 200 or another MATH course numbered above 218.
