The English and Writing department provides a stimulating environment for students who love literature and the craft of written expression.  To prepare for professions compatible with those interests, students may choose from a rich variety of courses that may lead to careers in education, law, library science, government, business writing, marketing, public relations, grant writing, creative writing, editing, technical writing, and many others.

The department of English and Writing welcomes you into a close family of faculty and students who support each other’s efforts to dream big and to achieve.  Students interested in publishing may become involved in producing The Briar Cliff Review, an internationally acclaimed literary magazine. Others may be involved in planning events such as poetry, fiction, and non-fiction readings by well-known regional and national authors.

The department invites its students to participate in a number of activities and events, including literary tours of England and Ireland, trips to attend professional regional theater, a departmental reading series, coffeehouse readings of student works, and numerous social and service activities.

The department offers two majors:  English and Writing. With either major, students are encouraged to tailor their educational experience to their projected career paths through the choice of electives, internship experiences, and supporting course work.  Department faculty are happy to advise and support students as they identify their goals and prepare to achieve them.
