Word: Creating a Cover Page

Updated 2010.09.14

Objectives

Add a cover page

1.    Click on the Insert tab

2.    In the Pages group, click on the down-arrow on the Cover Page button.

3.    A list of pre-designed cover pages will appear (see below). Click on the desired cover page. The simplest one is the Sideline style selected below.

Make the first page different from the rest

1.    Double-click in the header (or footer) of any page except the cover page.

2.    The Header & Footer Tools will appear with the Design tab below it.

3.    In the Options group, click on the Different First Page checkbox.

Inserting page numbers

1.    Position the cursor in the header (or footer) where you want the page numbers to be displayed. Note that since you do not want page numbers on the cover page, that you must be on a page other than the cover page.

2.    Insert page numbers:

Start numbering on the second page with 1

1.    You still need to have the Header & Footer Tools and its Design tab displayed.

2.    In the Headers & Footers group (left side of the ribbon), click Page Number, and then click Format Page Numbers.

3.    The Page Number Format dialog box will appear.

4.    In the Start at box, type 0. This will make the page number of the cover page #0, and the page number of the first page of your actual document #1.

5.    Click on the OK button when done.
