Excel: Editing a worksheet

 

Objectives:

 

Using Excel help (F1):

In the Search For box, type Edit cell, and press the Enter key.

In the Search Results list, click on Edit cell contents, and read the topics.

 

In the Search For box, type Circular reference, and press the Enter key.

In the Search Results list, click on Allow or correct a circular reference and read all of the topics.

Editing

To get this result:

Do this:

Replace the contents of a cell

Position the cursor on the cell and type the new data on top of it. If you change your mind before you press the <Enter> key, press <Escape>.

Edit a cell

Either:
(1) Select (click on) the cell and press <F2> or
(2) Double-click on the cell

Delete cells

Select the cells, then press the <Delete> key.

Insert rows

Select the row(s) where you want the new row(s) to appear, then choose "Insert" | "Rows". The selected rows will be pushed down.

Insert columns

Select the column(s) where you want the new column(s) to appear, then choose "Insert" | "Columns". The selected columns will be pushed to the right.

Delete entire rows

Select the row(s) you want to delete, then either (1) choose "Edit" | "Delete" | "Entire Row" or (2) right-click and choose “Delete”.

Delete entire columns

Select the column(s) you want to delete then either (1) choose "Edit" |"Delete" | "Entire Column" or (2) right-click and choose “Delete”.

Check spelling

Choose "Tools" | "Spelling"

Search and replace text

Choose "Edit" | "Find" | "Replace"

Insert a range of cells

(1)          Select where you want the cells to be inserted

(2)          Then choose "Insert" | "Cells"

Delete a range of cells:

(1)          Select the range of cells you want to be deleted

(2)          Then choose "Edit" | "Delete" | "Shift cells Up" or "Shift cells Left"

 

Circular References

Occasionally, you may create a circular reference when writing a formula in a cell. A circular reference is a formula that refers to itself. For example, if you put the formula =A1+1 in the cell A1, you would have a circular reference. This is generally a bad thing. Whenever this happens, the word "Circular" appears on the status bar of the worksheet followed by the cell that contains the circular reference. Go to this cell and correct your formula.
