Equipment & Facilities

The department continues to maintain modern equipment for student use in laboratories and research. Pictured below are some examples of the modern instrumentation available.

The New Varian Saturn GC/MS
	As part to the University's Title III grant, the department received a new GC/MS system that was installed in the summer of 2004. The unit pictured to the left is quite sensitive and has been used in a variety of labs, including the identification of the scents emitted by candies, such as Lifesavers, as well as the detection of cocaine on US paper currency.
Another Addition - an Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer
	The Bioanalyzer pictured to the left was obtained through a federal grant and installed in February, 2005. It is used for DNA and protein analysis in biochemistry labs. This is perhaps the only such instrument in use in an instructional undergraduate lab in the United States!
	Students using the Bioanalyzer are exposed today to lab-on-a-chip technology which will someday find its way into routine analytical and diagnostic procedures used in the health-fields. Here a student is loading a "chip."

Perkin-Elmer System-Lambda EZ210
	The department received a grant from the Pittsburgh Conference (PittCon) in March, 2000 for the purchase of this new scanning UV/Vis spectrophotometer and interfaced computer. Pictured below, this versatile system is to be used in a variety of courses, as well as in research.
	This spring (2007) the department acquired a new Thermo FT-IR primarily for use in Organic Chemistry labs. It has an ATR to expedite sample analysis. (photo courtesy of David Stoos)
