Market Economics –Team Hours-115, # Impacted-383

SIFE Jeopardy

  • Educated 125 8th grade students about the five SIFE individual topics

  • Visited classrooms once/month from
    October - February

  • SIFE used laptop and PowerPoint in small group format to play Jeopardy game

  • Students’ scores increased from an average of 54% on pretest to 91% on post-test

Global Panel

  • Hosted panel discussion - “Learnings from Global Marketplace”

  • Partnered with the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce

  • Panelists were:

  • Eldon Roth, Founder, Beef Products Incorporated

  • Jack Bernstein, President, State Steel Corp.

  • John Harty, Sales Director, Gelita North America

  • Panelists discussed Globalization and its affect on Supply & Demand

  • 250 students, faculty and community members attended.

  • Pre and Post Tests measuring attendees knowledge, understanding, interest & motivation increased on average from 2.6 to 3.7 (1-5 scale)

Camp PYLOT (Preparing Young Leaders of Tomorrow)

  • Three day middle school camp that served as both community service and fundraiser (netting a $2,400 profit)

  • Filled to capacity with 25 students including 5 scholarship students from Girls Inc.

  • Visited Jolly Time Popcorn, Sioux Gateway Airport and HyVee Grocery Store

  • Competed in negotiation, team building, business and marketing challenges, ethical decision making and creativity building exercises

  • Results from one on one interviews with parents and surveys from children show high satisfaction (87% of students very satisfied, 80% will attend next year).

 Siouxland Tanzania Educational Medical Ministries (STEMM)

  • Partnership between STEMM and BCU SIFE

  • Created the “Promising Future Scholarship and Award”

  • Gives 2 Tanzanian students a full college scholarship, and laptop computer with software

  • Based on exam scores and personal essay on “How winning this award will help me make a positive difference in my community, my country and my world.”

Your Success Network – Jen Kushell

  • Developed workshop with this SIFE partner company

  • Helped students “leverage their assets” by completing a free online self assessment and showing how the results can help students “master their universe”.

  • Piloted workshop with BCU Freshman and High School Seniors

  • Created “how to” turnkey DVD and materials to encourage other SIFE teams to participate in this project.

  • Results to date rate the program an 8.4/10 on effectiveness.

  • Paired with Moroccan SIFE team to co-sponsor video training contest for YSN.

Online Identity and Interviewing Skills Workshops

  • Through research discovered 87% of BCU students have Facebook and/or MySpace account, and 63% of those have “incriminating” photos on the site. 

  • Held “how to clean up your online identity” and interviewing skills workshops with mock interviews on campus and as part of a regional career fair.

  • 90% of students rated workshop extremely or very helpful.

Entrepreneurship– Team Hours-532, # Impacted-3011

Snackwise

  • SIFE and partner Jolly Time Popcorn created product development and  marketing competition for regional high schools

  • 7 Regional High School teams created healthy snack products using Jolly Time Popcorn

  • SIFE judged student entries on 6 criteria:

  • Nutrition

  • Taste

  • Attractiveness

  • Creativity

  •  Profit statement

  • Marketing materials

  • Top 3 teams used creative marketing strategies to sell their products at the local mall

  • Teams kept profits and won cash and prizes

  • Taught teams about product development, marketing, finance

  • Over 500,000 GRP’s generated

We’ll Shop U

  • SIFE’s Mystery Shopper Business

  • Designed to help businesses improve customer service and appearance

  • SIFE students shopped and evaluated the store and then gave feedback to managers

  • Served 6 businesses

ReMarkAble Research and Consulting

  • Helps small business owners improve their understanding and marketing of their businesses.

  • In second year of operation, grew business from six to nine clients.

  • Conducted market research with 600 consumers

  • Last year’s clients became more successful using our plans

Financial Literacy, Team Hours 970,  # Impacted-1331

Spend or Save – Your Credit Journey Game

  • Board game targeted at freshman/high school seniors

  • Teaches budgeting skills and planning for the unexpected

  • Students given a mock identity and must fill out balance sheet with financial information

  • Makes housing, food and transportation choices

  • Plays game to simulate one month of life with good/bad experiences

  • Must finalize budget and debrief choices made

  • Part of BCU’s required freshman orientation

  • Funded by grant from AIG

Spend or Save – Your Credit Journey Computer Simulation

  • Computer Simulation required during exit interview for BCU Seniors

  • Input credit score and presents series of options to student

  • Demonstrates effect credit score has on loan rates, and effect missing a payment has on credit score.

  • Under construction and will be piloted with this year’s seniors.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Credit Education

  • Free service to help low income or disabled taxpayers with tax returns

  • SIFE students designed an interactive credit education discussion with taxpayers while they wait to have taxes done. 

  • Taught importance of knowing and managing their credit score.

  • Given information from HSBC on how to obtain a free credit report and improve their credit.

  • Educated over 600 taxpayers this year.

Ethics, Team Hours 229  # Impacted - 1824

Lemonade Stand

  • An original play and bilingual children’s book highlighting ethical dilemmas in competition, quality control, and mergers

  • Performed to 10 after school programs targeted at low income and/or minority youth, and one school group, 410 students in all

  • Our post test research showed that 100% of students could identify the ethical dilemmas in the play.  However, only 77% viewing students chose correct response when faced a similar ethical dilemmas indicating ethics remains a challenge.

Ethics Apprentice

  • Based on the television series “The Apprentice”

  • Held two events, a BCU only event, and a “Battle of the Schools” event for regional universities.

  • Students from all majors were confronted with four ethical dilemmas

  • Three BCU business faculty members served as “The Donald” and team

  • Student teams presented responses and were progressively “fired”

  • Wayne State College, Wayne, Nebraska won the $500 cash prize sponsored by the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce

  • 92% of attendees rated the program excellent, and 100% want us to hold the event again.

 MPAA Anti Piracy Ad

  • Sold to all five local television media affiliates (ABC, NBC, FOX, CW and CBS) and is set to air more than 500 times from February through July.

  • Produced 60 second PSA showing effects of money loss on the production of movies

  • Currently marketing the PSA to local media outlets
