Chargers perform well at the John Dalton Invite in South Dakota

NAIA No. 1 Hastings came from behind to defeat No. 4 Briar Cliff, 70-64, at Lynn Farrrell Arena in Hastings, Neb.


The Chargers played well early in the game, leading by as many as 10 points in the first half and going into halftime with a 31-23 lead. Briar Cliff shot 43 percent from the field the first half, but was 0-7 from beyond the arc.


The Charger defense held No. 1 Hastings to only 17 percent shooting in the first half. However, the Broncos bounced back in the second half to hit 59 percent to finish with 37.5 percent for the game.


Grider finished with 18 points to lead the Chargers while Morgan Brown added 16 of her own. Sophomore Megan Salcedo finished with 14 points and six rebounds.


Lindsay Ducey led four Hastings players in double figures with a game-high 24 points. Heather McKeon and Rachel Isherwood finished with 11 points each, while Becky Tesch had 10.


The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Chargers. One of those wins happened on Wednesday night in Sioux Center as the Charger women won an overtime thriller against the Dordt Defenders.


Kylie Dilla hit a baseline jumper as time expired that sent the game into overtime against the Dordt Defenders Wednesday night in the GPAC matchup. The NAIA No. 4 Chargers won the game in overtime, 79-76.


Dordt led most of the game and were ahead by as much as 12 in the first half, while leading 62-52 with 4:48 in regulation. Briar Cliff then went on a 10-1 run, pulling it to 63-62. With 1.8 seconds left to play, Kate Du Mez was called for an offensive foul on the inbounds play that allowed the Chargers to have one more shot at the win. Dilla then answered with the baseline jumper to send it to OT.


In the game’s final 3:40, Dilla scored seven points and finished the game with 11 on the night. Grider led the Chargers in scoring with 28 points while Morgan Brown finished with 16. Salcedo had 10 points and Below added four. Determan led the team in assists with five while scoring five.


Dordt was led by Julia Dekoekkoek’s game-high 30 points. Amber Soodsma had 17 while McKinzie Schmidt and Bre Schneidermann had 12 and 10, respectively.


The Chargers are now 22-4 on the season and 11-3 in conference play. Their next game will be this Wednesday when they take on Sioux Falls.
