Briar Cliff University’s Cliff Singers and Chamber Choir will present “Voices of Earth” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, in the Chapel of Our Lady of Grace on campus.
The winter choral concert will feature an hour of music from diverse nationalities celebrating African-American heritage in honor of Black History Month.
Additionally, the BCU choirs will present the world premiere performance of “Voices of Earth,” which was commissioned especially for the Briar Cliff University Singers in honor of the BCU’s 2009-2010 academic year theme “Care for Creation.” The work is a setting of text by the 19th century Canadian poet Archibald Lampman by Chicago-based composer Paul Carey.
“Premiering a new piece of music presents an exceptional educational opportunity for Briar Cliff students,” said Dr. Sean Burton, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities at Briar Cliff. “Carey has composed a challenging yet engaging setting of text, which will surely resonate with choirs and audiences alike for years to come.”
This performance also kicks off the BCU choirs’ concert tour of Hawaii from Feb. 19 – 26. Performances in Hawaii will include Saint Rita Catholic Church in Nanakuli, the Waikiki Beach Walk, the USS Arizona, Kapiolani Community College and the University of Hawaii-Manoa.
