Briar Cliff University Offers College Freshmen Boot Camp
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Going from high
school to college can be stressful for students. In an effort to
assist in the transition, Briar Cliff University recently
conducted its fifth annual Academic Success Bridge Program – an
intensive weeklong academic program that prepares students for
college life.
“The Bridge Program was designed as an
academic boot camp in which students learn to meet upcoming
demands of college,” said Sean Herring, Ed.D., director of the
Academic Success Center at BCU. “Students were challenged to be
leaders through 12-hour days of structured academic and
integrated activities,” Dr. Herring explained.
In the Bridge Program, a select group
of freshmen earned college credit by participating in academic
sessions, study workshops, one-on-one tutorials, curriculum
seminars and external classroom assignments. Over 30 BCU
faculty, staff and administrators shared their expertise in
writing, reading, mathematics, computer skills, study skills,
leadership, cultural diversity, history, psychology, liberal
arts, sports, drug prevention, government, criminal justice and
theology.
Students also took part in the
program’s faculty lecture seminars, including a wide range of
global topics such as the Drug Court System and Societal
Responsibility; Tracking Religious Change in the USA;
Introduction to Music of Foreign and Diverse Cultures; Thinking
Critically About Global Warming; Science-Fiction Literature;
History of the Soviet Union; Healthcare in the USA; The History
of Writing; and Creating A One-Man Play.
