SIOUX CITY, Iowa –Matthew Barcus, a senior psychology major at Briar Cliff University, recently was awarded First Place in the 30th Annual Great Plains Students’ Psychology Convention in St. Joseph, Mo.

Barcus of Sioux City took top honors in the “Sex Roles Empirical Oral Presentation” category with his presentation titled “It’s So Gay! A survey on Homophobia and Correlate Factors Associated with Anti-Homosexual Prejudice.” Briar Cliff junior psychology major Kelsey Hall, Carroll, Iowa, also attended the convention.

Briar Cliff was among nearly 40 colleges and universities in Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas that were represented at the convention.

“Matthew did an excellent job in his presentation, which was well-attended,” said Todd Knealing, Ph.D., department chairperson and assistant professor of psychology at Briar Cliff. “Conferences such as this offer students an important opportunity to contribute to their discipline. This, in turn, can improve their likelihood of being accepted into graduate study programs."
