BCU Psychology Student Takes First Place in Regional Competition
SIOUX CITY, Iowa –Matthew Barcus, a senior
psychology major at Briar Cliff University, recently was awarded
First Place in the 30th Annual Great Plains Students’
Psychology Convention in St. Joseph, Mo.
Barcus of Sioux City took top honors in the
“Sex Roles Empirical Oral Presentation” category with his
presentation titled “It’s So Gay! A survey on Homophobia and
Correlate Factors Associated with Anti-Homosexual Prejudice.”
Briar Cliff junior psychology major Kelsey Hall, Carroll, Iowa,
also attended the convention.
Briar Cliff was among nearly 40 colleges and
universities in Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska,
Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas that were represented at
the convention.
“Matthew did an excellent job in his
presentation, which was well-attended,” said Todd Knealing,
Ph.D., department chairperson and assistant professor of
psychology at Briar Cliff. “Conferences such as this offer
students an important opportunity to contribute to their
discipline. This, in turn, can improve their likelihood of being
accepted into graduate study programs."
