Foster and Adoptive Parent Workshop
Offered at Briar Cliff University
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The social work
department at Briar Cliff University will sponsor “Beyond
Consequences: A Love Based Approach to Helping Children with
Severe Behaviors” from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March
27, in the Saint Francis Center in the Stark Student Center on
campus.
This free workshop is designed for
all Siouxland foster and adoptive parents and social work
students who are studying child welfare. The workshop, co-sponsored
by BCU’s social work department and the Iowa Foster and Adoptive
Parents Association (IFAPA), offers ways to provide
emotional safety for children with trauma histories.
Foster and adoptive care specialist Mr. Kim
Combes, LBSW, M.Ed., will conduct the workshop. Combes, who has
been in human services since 1980, is a certified trainer by the
National Foster Parent Association. He presents nationally and
across Iowa on the topic of foster and adoptive care. He has
been active on local, state and national foster and adoptive
care boards. Combes writes for several foster and adoptive care
publications and is on the advisory board for Fostering
Families Today magazine. Combes, who currently has a private
practice, was a social worker for the Iowa Department of Human
Services. He also served as a family therapist for two private
agencies. He and his wife, Diane, reside in Colo, Iowa. They
have a 21-year-old daughter and five adopted children.
