Briar Cliff Students Attend Tallgrass Prairie
Management Seminar
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Environmental
science students at Briar Cliff University recently returned
from the Sixth Annual Tallgrass Prairie Management Seminar in
Beatrice, Neb.
Attending the seminar were BCU
students Erik Lindsay of Pierce Neb., Brian Souder of Rockwell
City, Iowa, and Craig Samek of Sioux City. While at the event,
students heard environmental experts address the ecological
history of North American grasslands, restoring oak woodlands,
weed management and patch burn grazing, among other timely
topics.
“I was truly grateful for this
opportunity to be introduced to new ways of maintaining the
balance of a delicate ecological system, as well as seeing land
owners and scientists cooperate in this project,” said Samek, a
senior at BCU.
“Attending this seminar has given these
students an excellent start on the prairie ecology course we
offer at BCU during Term III, which begins March 1,” said Brian
Hazlett, Ph.D., director of environmental science and professor
of biology, who accompanied the group to Beatrice.
