BCU Students Selected to Give Commencement Addresses

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Graduation candidates Carolyn Lohr and Kari Rhodes, both of Sioux City, have been chosen to address their peers during Briar Cliff University’s 77th commencement on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Orpheum Theatre in Sioux City. Lohr, a traditional student, and Rhodes, a continuing education student, were chosen to be keynote speakers at the ceremony by a panel of faculty members and students.

A candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre and music, Lohr’s speech will emphasize the dedication shown by Briar Cliff professors.

“Great teachers are fostered by great love,” Lohr said. “The dedication shown by my Briar Cliff professors is not only inspired by enthusiasm for their respective fields; it is an extension of their love of family, friends and God,” she explained. “It is my hope that when graduates reflect on Briar Cliff, they will consider the many individuals who have determined their unique experiences.”

As she anticipates addressing her colleagues and professors, she said, “I have more emotions flying around than articulated thoughts.  I'm nervous to "represent" a group of such intelligent, wonderful people.  I hope my speech demonstrates to my peers and professors a respect and admiration for their accomplishments.” Her immediate family lives in Sioux City and will be on hand for the event. After graduation, Lohr will be moving to Alexandria, Minn., to work with the L'Homme Dieu Theatre for the summer.

Rhodes, a candidate for Bachelor of Social Work, will deliver her commencement speech entitled, “The Rolodex of Life,” which focuses on the journey of the Class of 2008 from classmates to colleagues. “It is my hope that my message conveys the forward action that must take place by all graduates. We have been blessed with the skills and must now put them to use,” she explained.

Rhodes said that she appreciates the opportunity to address her classmates on such an important day. “It reminds me more of a memorable conversation rather than a speech,” Rhodes said. Her mother, Karen Rhodes, will join her on graduation day. After graduation, Rhodes will be working as a case manager with Siouxland Aging in Sioux City.
