BCU Students Present Research at Great Plains Students’ Psychology Convention

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Briar Cliff University students recently presented their research at the 28th Annual Great Plains Students’ Psychology Convention at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan. The annual convention showcases psychological research by students from the Great Plains region.

“This was a great opportunity for our students to gain experience in presenting their research to other students and faculty,” said Todd Knealing, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology at Briar Cliff University. “This sort of experience helps to prepare students for work after college and for post-graduate educational experiences.”

BCU students who presented their psychology research at the conference are:

Tawsha Peterson, Rosalie, Neb.; Kayla Sorenson, Denison, Iowa; and Crystallyn Meyeraan, Sheldon, Iowa; presented a paper titled “Effects of Distraction Upon Memory.” This paper examined whether musical distractions during a memorization task or during the recall portion of a task would influence accuracy of to-be recalled items.

Michelle Burnight, Sioux City, Iowa; Samantha Garay, Lincoln, Neb.; Ronda Kachena, Yankton, S.D.; Samantha Donovan, Waterloo, Iowa; and Kristen Strunk, McCook, Neb., presented a paper titled, “Accuracy of Eyewitness Testimony.” The paper assessed the accuracy of witness recollection of suspect appearance based on viewing a simulated crime.
