The Briar Cliff Spanish
program emphasizes the
development of oral
competency in using a
second language. All
course work is designed
to foster skill at
spontaneous
communication in the new
language. Skills for
writing and reading are
also taught, but faculty
emphasize speaking,
questioning, answering,
describing, and in
general, talking easily
in the second language.
And in order to
strengthen those skills,
the department
recommends that students
who major or minor in
Spanish include a
learning experience in a
country where Spanish is
the dominant language.
Most students seek that
experience in Mexico;
some pursue it in Spain
or elsewhere. The
department offers help
for students to find
programs and
accommodations that meet
their needs and
financial resources.
