The department of music
seeks to provide a means
for spiritual,
intellectual and
artistic development
consistent with a
liberal education. The
department provides
courses of study and
professional development
for students preparing
for careers in music
education, church music,
performance or for
further graduate study.
The music major focuses
on voice, piano,
conducting, and organ
and provides abundant
opportunities to develop
musicianship through
performances, analysis,
familiarity with musical
styles, and listening
experiences.
The core of every
music curriculum is the
individual lesson and
performing ensembles.
All music majors must
enroll in applied music
courses and take part in
regularly scheduled
performance seminars
each term. Participation
in at least one
performing ensemble
(choral, instrumental or
liturgical) each term
the student is
registered is also
required for graduation.
Cliff Singers is the
required ensemble each
term for music majors
with vocal emphasis.
The listening
experience is also a
central component at
Briar Cliff ’s music
program. Music majors
are required to complete
nine terms of Recital
Attendance (MUSC 03M) by
attending student,
faculty and guest
recitals scheduled each
term.
